The Natural History
of the
Cheshire Cat

A tongue in cheek study of one of literature's curiosities

(and other nonsensical, jabberwockish gobbledygook)

Welcome to Deep in the Midwest

Always difficult to observe in the wild, the feral population of Cheshire Cats is said to be in rapid decline. I argue that the Cheshire population is not declining--it is the vision of the observers which should be questioned. I believe this is due to the growth and maturity of those observers who in adulthood fail to update their skills with regular play and readings of fairy tales. We see what we think we should see. As adults, we often let the complicated details of life obscure the wonders all around us.

Please blink your eyes twice, roll through the hole in the hollow tree, and save your Cheshire Cats from extinction!

Main links open in the same page.   In the interests of comfort and security, the webmistress dispensed with frames and  fancy scripts to open windows, so all previews *should* open in their own browser windows. Hint: resize the first window that opens, and all other previews will open in the smaller window (well, it works in Internet Explorer...)

If that Cheshire in the upper left-hand corner is in your way, adjust the width of your browser window to make the viewing area wider if possible.  He should stay put in the corner.  Alas, Cheshires can sometimes be notorious troublemakers...

Please report any misbehaving Cheshires,  pages, links, or graphics to the webmistress

It's a full-time job just keeping the Cheshires straightened out!
